Frequently asked questions

What medications do your clinicians prescribe, and are they FDA-approved?

We utilizes 13 distinct medications (available in over 60 combinations) to align with your biology and aid your weight loss journey. Discover more details about each one here.

Our regimen features FDA-approved anti-obesity drugs as well as medications prescribed “off-label.” Research validates the effectiveness of these medications in assisting weight loss. When a medication is prescribed for a purpose other than its initial approval, it’s termed “off-label prescribing.” This practice is legal, safe, and prevalent: in the U.S., 1 out of every 5 prescriptions is off-label.

A clinician will evaluate your medical background, weight trajectory, and lifestyle to tailor a treatment strategy harmonized with your specific biological makeup.

It’s essential to highlight: Prescription decisions rest with the medical provider’s judgment. We do not influence prescribing practices nor interfere with the medical discretion of our associated health professionals.

What if the medication I am prescribed does not work for me?

That’s an excellent query best directed to your board-certified medical professional who will oversee your reaction to the prescribed medication and can provide insights about the optimal clinical strategy for you. Your provider has the flexibility to modify the dosage, change your medication, or introduce a new prescription to what you’re currently taking, ensuring sustained outcomes. ShednShape’s clinicians are equipped with a broad spectrum of medications, allowing them a variety of avenues to customize treatment for you. We recognize that weight loss is a journey demanding time and persistence, and we’re committed to supporting you throughout.

What pharmacy do you use?

We use third party pharmacy fulfillment partners to ship most medicines directly to our members.

You may choose to fill your prescription at a local pharmacy, too. In that case, your ShednShape membership won’t cover the cost.

If a medication isn’t available through our pharmacy partners, a member of the Care Team will reach out to you with options.

What is the Rx Path?

Our Rx Path membership offers the following benefits:

  1. Upon completing a medical intake form, you’ll have one-on-one consultations with board-certified practitioners specialized in weight loss.
  2. Our medical professionals prescribe an extensive array of drugs to tailor your care*.
  3. Dedicated one-on-one coaching support during the initial four weeks to guide you effectively.
  4. Access to the Our Habits program via our health app, crafted by physicians and behavioral experts to bolster your success in adopting healthier lifestyle habits.
  5. Entry to our nurturing our community, where you can share and celebrate your progress alongside our health coaches and numerous other members.

Your membership covers the expenses for generic drugs and their delivery, excluding GLP-1 medications, provided they are filled by our e-pharmacy partners. Should you opt for an alternate pharmacy, the medication costs will be your responsibility.

*Please note that all GLP-1 drugs are brand-name and aren’t covered in your membership fees. We will assist in determining if your health insurance might defray the costs. Any required insurance copays will be your responsibility. If insurance coverage isn’t feasible, you might bear the expense directly, or we can collaborate to identify a different weight care solution.

Why use medication for weight loss?

Science overwhelmingly shows—and the American Medical Association agrees—that obesity is a chronic, complex disease that requires medical attention.

Genetics contribute to as many as 70 percent of obesity cases. Hormones and your environment can also play a role. And traditional diets can lead to a cycle of weight loss and regain that makes it harder to lose weight and keep it off.

Our program is designed by one of the top obesity medicine specialists in the country. Our board-certified clinicians work to discover the underlying causes of each person’s obesity and recommend personalized treatment plans for lasting weight loss

What is combination therapy and is this something that your clinicians practice?

Combination therapy refers to a clinical approach where two or more drugs are prescribed to address a condition.

Our medical professionals have the capability to prescribe various medications that can be combined. They can customize a treatment strategy that aligns with your biological needs and weight reduction objectives.

Do you require insurance?

We do not accept insurance. Your monthly membership encompasses the expenses of many of the routinely prescribed drugs we provide.

GLP-1s (Ozempic®, Wegovy®, Mounjaro®, and others) are not encompassed in the program’s fees. If our associated clinician determines that a GLP-1 is the most suitable medication for you, we’ll assist you in navigating the insurance procedures to ascertain if your insurer will defray the prescription’s cost.

Occasionally, insurance firms mandate individuals to experiment with alternative medications before greenlighting a GLP-1 prescription. Should this occur, our clinician can collaborate with you to devise an alternative efficacious weight management regimen.

Can I pay with my FSA/HSA account?

You may be eligible for reimbursement through a health savings account, health reimbursement account, or flexible spending account. Our payment processor will allow you to purchase using an HSA or FSA card. However, it’s up to your insurance provider whether they will accept the charge.

Each insurance provider has their own guidelines for reimbursement. Contact your insurer to determine your eligibility for coverage and your out-of-pocket costs.

Please note we don’t provide itemized receipts if your insurance company asks for them. However, we can send you a detailed email regarding your participation in our program along with a receipt of the program costs.

Our Clinical Care Team can also write a letter of medical necessity to support your reimbursement request.

If your insurance denies coverage, then you’ll be responsible for the cost. If you have any questions, would like to receive the email or letter of necessity, or need more information, please contact our support team at support@loseweightwise.com.

How long will I need to stay on medication?

Our medical provider is the best person to help you answer this question. The answer is different for each individual.

Obesity is a complex chronic disease—and genetics cause as many as 70 percent of cases. Many people need to take weight loss medication long-term, even after reaching their weight goal. Combining medication with lifestyle changes not only helps people lose weight—it also helps people maintain weight loss and avoid chronic conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes. You can read more about how medication supports weight maintenance.

The Obesity Medicine Association considers long-term treatment with medication a current standard of care. You can talk to your clinician about a maintenance plan as you approach your goal weight. If you decide to stop taking your medication, your provider will instruct you on safely tapering off.

Is bloodwork required to get started?

Most of our prescriptions do not require blood work or insurance. A few do, including metformin and GLP-1s such as Ozempic® or Mounjaro®.

If you and your provider decide that one of these medicines should be part of your treatment, you’ll need to submit blood work and insurance. Your provider will let you know when they need these documents.

The lab test should be no more than 6 months old. You may already have results that we can use, or you may need a test.

If you don’t have blood work from the past 6 months, you can ask your local care provider to order these tests, or we can connect you with our preferred lab network.

Please read here for more information on how to get blood work and how to upload it to our portal.

Please note the cost of lab work is not included in membership. It’s an out-of-pocket expense.

What happens during the medical consults?

During your initial consultation, your provider will review your medical history, your weight care goals and current medications you are taking. They’ll use this information to recommend a personalized treatment plan to work with your unique biology for effective lasting weight loss.

During follow up consultations, you can share your progress, ask questions, and address any medical concerns about your weight care. Your provider will monitor you and may make adjustments to your treatment plan.

If you have questions or concerns regarding your membership, billing, or shipping please reach out to the Support team at support@loseweightwise.com

What is off-label drug use?

Every FDA-approved medication has an approved label or indication for which it is prescribed such as a specific disease or condition. When a clinician prescribes medication “off-label,” they are prescribing medication for use in a different way than the medication was approved by the FDA.

Providers frequently prescribe medications “off label” when the medicine has a known benefit to treating a condition. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality reports that one in five, or 20%, of all prescriptions in the United States, are for off-label use.

While not always labeled for weight loss, all of our generic medications are FDA approved and have shown safety and efficacy for weight loss. These medications are the same as those offered in academic medical centers. Treatment through this platform expands access to obesity treatment by bypassing long waitlists for appointments and copays for visits.

When prescribed responsibly, off-label medication can help expand a patient’s range of options to ensure they’re able to access the appropriate medication at the right dose for their specific biological needs.
